What to Do When You Can’t Find Fluorescent Tubes Anymore

As of January 1, 2025, California has enacted Assembly Bill 2208, which prohibits the sale and distribution of pin-base compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and linear fluorescent lamps (LFLs), including common types like T8 and T12 tubes. This legislation aims to reduce mercury exposure and promote energy-efficient lighting solutions .

If you're unable to find the fluorescent tube you need, consider the following alternatives:

Direct Replacement LED Tubes (Plug-and-Play)

This is the simplest solution for most homeowners and business owners. These LED tubes are designed to work with your existing fluorescent fixture and can be found at most local hardware stores. Just remove the old tube and install the new one—no rewiring required. However, this option depends on the condition and compatibility of your existing ballast.

Advantages:

  • Simple installation—just replace the old fluorescent tube with the LED equivalent.

  • No rewiring required; utilizes the existing ballast.

Drawbacks:

  • If the existing ballast is incompatible or fails, the LED tube won't operate.

  • Replacing a faulty ballast can be as costly as installing a new fixture.

Complete Fixture Replacement with LED

Upgrading to a new LED fixture is a long-term solution that offers the latest lighting technology. Many modern fixtures include a built-in switch to adjust color temperature, giving you full control over the look and feel of your space. While this option offers excellent efficiency and performance, it does come with a higher upfront cost—and if the integrated LEDs fail, the whole fixture typically needs to be replaced.

Advantages:

  • Modern LED fixtures often feature adjustable color temperatures, allowing customization of lighting ambiance.

  • Enhanced energy efficiency and reduced maintenance.

Drawbacks:

  • Higher initial cost due to fixture replacement.

  • If the integrated LEDs fail, the entire fixture may need replacement.

3. Ballast Bypass LED Tubes (Direct Wire)

This option involves bypassing the fixture’s existing ballast and wiring the LED tubes directly to power. It’s a reliable, long-term solution that reduces maintenance by eliminating ballast-related issues. While installation requires a qualified electrician, future tube replacements are easy and allow flexibility in selecting different color temperatures.

Advantages:

  • Eliminates reliance on ballasts, reducing potential failure points.

  • Future tube replacements are straightforward and cost-effective.

  • Offers flexibility to change light color by selecting different LED tubes.

Drawbacks:

  • Requires rewiring to bypass the ballast, necessitating professional installation.

  • Initial installation is more labor-intensive compared to plug-and-play options.
